What makes it special
Rovos Rail is the one entry in this collection that is not a destination. It is a moving hotel of 36 suites and a maximum of 72 guests, crossing as many as five countries on a single itinerary. Clients do not go to Rovos Rail. They travel on it, between the places they were going anyway, and that distinction should shape every conversation about it.

By rail. Every South African journey begins or ends at Rovos Rail Station in Capital Park — the company's own private station in Pretoria, not Pretoria's public station and not Johannesburg. Check in a minimum of one hour before departure, or two for the museum and yard tour, which is worth the earlier arrival. The southern terminus uses the Rovos lounge at Cape Town station. Passports are collected at check-in.

May to September — the safe months. Southern African winter: dry, clear and settled across the Highveld, the Karoo and Zimbabwe, with the best game viewing of the year as the bush thins and animals concentrate at water. Hwange and Etosha are at their most productive. Days are pleasant, nights are cold — the Karoo and Highveld drop close to freezing in June and July, and the observation balcony is genuinely chilly after dark. Victoria Falls is easing off peak flow and the view into the gorge improves as spray drops. This window sells out first.
