Travel Advice & Access
By air. Hosea Kutako International (WDH) sits 45 kilometres east of Windhoek and takes long-haul from Frankfurt, plus regional services from Johannesburg (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), Addis Ababa and Doha. Most clients arrive via a South African hub. Eros (ERS), inside the city, is the light-aircraft airport and where fly-in circuits begin — allow 45 minutes and a separate transfer between the two, and do not let a same-day international arrival connect onto a last charter departure. Walvis Bay (WVB) takes scheduled domestic and some regional services and is a useful start or finish point.
Light aircraft. The fly-in circuit uses Cessna 210s and Caravans on gravel strips, with 20 kilograms per person in soft-sided bags — no rigid frames or wheels, and passenger weights declared at booking. The flying is not merely transfer: the legs over the dune sea and down the wreck coast are among the best scenic flights in Africa. Cost it as a headline line item rather than a transfer, because on a full circuit the charter can approach what the beds cost.
Access and flying times by area
| Area | Access | Notes | | Sossusvlei / Sesriem | Charter from ERS, or drive | About 1 hr flying. By road roughly 350 km and 5 hrs from Windhoek, largely gravel over the Spreetshoogte or Remhoogte passes. | | Swakopmund / Walvis Bay | WVB scheduled, charter, or drive | Under 1 hr flying. 360 km and about 4 hrs on the tarred B2 — the one genuinely easy drive in the country. | | Damaraland / Twyfelfontein | Charter to lodge strip | 1.5 to 2 hrs flying. By road 550 to 600 km and 7 to 8 hrs from Windhoek; 4 to 5 hrs from Swakopmund. | | Etosha (south and east) | Charter to Ongava or camp strips | About 1.5 hrs flying. Andersson Gate roughly 450 km and 5 hrs by road, tarred most of the way. | | Skeleton Coast (north) | Charter only | 2.5 to 3 hrs from Windhoek. No self-drive access to the northern concessions at any price. | | Fish River Canyon / Lüderitz | Charter, or a long drive | About 2 hrs flying. 700 to 800 km and 8 to 9 hrs by road — a full day, and two to reach both. | | Zambezi Region (Caprivi) | Katima Mulilo (MPA) or charter | Around 2.5 hrs flying. Over 1,200 km by road. Usually combined with Chobe and Victoria Falls, not with the desert. |
On the ground. Namibia's B roads are tarred and excellent. Everything else — the C and D network that reaches the lodges — is gravel, and gravel here means corrugation, loose surface and blind crests. Punctures are routine rather than unlucky, so two spares and the means to change them are standard, and rollovers caused by over-correction at speed are the commonest serious accident. Eighty kilometres an hour is fast enough. Fuel gaps of 200 kilometres and more are normal, some stations take cash only, and mobile coverage disappears for hours at a time.
Routing advice. This is the conversation that decides whether the trip works. A Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha loop is around 2,000 kilometres, and driven independently it means four or five days of six to eight hours behind the wheel — days the client is paying luxury rates not to spend. Self-drive is how most of Namibia is sold and it is a legitimate way to travel, but it is not a luxury product. For this segment there are two answers: fly the circuit by light aircraft, or drive it with a private guide-driver in an equipped 4x4 so the client is a passenger with a naturalist rather than a navigator with a puncture. A hybrid works well too — fly the long legs to the Skeleton Coast and Etosha, drive the short ones.
Practicalities. Namibia has tightened entry requirements for several previously exempt nationalities, so confirm the current position for each passport at the time of booking rather than assuming visa-free entry. The Namibian dollar is pegged one to one with the South African rand and rand notes are accepted everywhere, though Namibian dollars are not accepted in South Africa. Cards work in towns, cash is needed for remote fuel and tips. Park entry fees are payable at the gates. Book peak dry season twelve months ahead.
