When to Go
February to April — the sweet spot. Domestic school holidays end in mid-January, so February arrives warm, settled and empty, with the sea at its warmest and the estuaries clear. Days sit in the mid-twenties and the walking on Robberg and in the Tsitsikamma is at its best.
May to August — winter, and better than it sounds. Temperatures rarely drop below 10 degrees and clear days between fronts often reach 18 to 20. The forest is at its best, with full rivers and cool walking. Southern right whales arrive off Plettenberg Bay from July and stay through December. The trade-offs are real: rain in any week, and a cold sea. The Knysna Oyster Festival takes ten days from late June and fills the town.
September to November — spring and the whale peak. Whale numbers peak in September and October, with cows and calves close inshore off Plettenberg Bay and below the Robberg cliffs; this is the window for any client whose priority is marine wildlife. Weather is the least predictable of the year, and early-spring berg winds are the fire-risk period.
Mid-December to mid-January — peak, and the weeks to steer around. South African school holidays turn Plettenberg Bay and Knysna into domestic resort towns. Restaurants need booking weeks ahead, the N2 is heavy, and rates hit their annual maximum with minimum stays attached. Weather is reliably warm at 26 to 30 degrees and the mood is festive, which suits some family clients.
