By air. Cape Town International (CPT) lies 20km east of the city — 25 to 35 minutes to the Waterfront, Camps Bay or the city bowl outside peak traffic. Direct long-haul services operate from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul and Addis Ababa, with seasonal direct routes from the United States. Where no direct routing exists, connect through Johannesburg (JNB) on a two-hour domestic hop. European guests arrive with no jet lag — South Africa sits in the same time band as Central Europe. CPT is also well placed for the Winelands: Stellenbosch and Paarl are reached without entering the city at all.

On the ground. Private chauffeur transfers are the standard at this level, and a chauffeur-guide is essential for Winelands days — South African drink-driving enforcement is strict and tasting itineraries are not compatible with self-drive. Where guests insist on driving themselves, the Franschhoek Wine Tram and estate-to-estate walking clusters in Constantia are the practical workarounds. Helicopter transfers between the city, the Winelands and the Whale Coast are available and increasingly requested at the top end.

Drive times and access by sub-region

Constantia — 25 minutes from CPT. Closest to the city; easy half-day, or stay here instead of the city bowl.

Stellenbosch — 45 minutes from CPT. Via the N2 and R310; the natural base for a multi-night Winelands stay.

Paarl — 50 minutes from CPT. N1 north; pairs naturally with Franschhoek over the Helshoogte Pass.

Franschhoek — 60 minutes from CPT. Via Stellenbosch and Helshoogte — a scenic drive in its own right.

Hermanus — 90 minutes from CPT. Coastal R44 via Clarence Drive, or the faster N2 inland route.

Routing advice. The classic shape is city first, Winelands second — arrive jet-lag-free into Cape Town, spend three or four nights on the peninsula, then move inland to slow down. Guests continuing to the Garden Route should route Cape Town → Hermanus → Garden Route along the coast rather than doubling back. The Clarence Drive stretch of the R44 between Gordon's Bay and Rooi-Els is one of the finest coastal roads anywhere and is worth building into the schedule deliberately.

By rail. Both Rovos Rail and the Blue Train depart from Cape Town, which makes the city a natural start or finish point for any rail-inclusive itinerary.

Practicalities. Most EU, UK and US passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days. No vaccinations are required, tap water is safe to drink, and the region is malaria-free. December and January stays should be booked nine to twelve months ahead — the best villas, estate suites and restaurant tables go early, and Franschhoek in particular sells out.
